Fundamentals

• Trials
  • e.g. roll of a die
• Sample Space
  • All possible outcomes of a chance experiment as a list.
  • e.g. $S=\{1,2,3,4,5,6\}$
• Outcome
  • A possible result.
• Event
  • A collection of favourable outcomes (outcomes that are wanted).
  • This is displayed as $P(event)$.
  • e.g. $P(even)=\frac{3}{6}=\frac{1}{2}$
• Equally Likely Outcomes
  • Outcomes that have the same chance of occurring (same probability).
• Language of Probability
  • 0% = impossible
  • 0% < $P$ < 50% = unlikely
  • 50% = even chance
  • 50% < $P$ < 100% = likely
  • 100% = certain
• Theoretical Probability
  • What is expected to happen in theory.
  • e.g. $P(\boxed{rolling\; a\; 3})=\frac{1}{6}$
• Experimental Probability
  • What is calculated from an experiment (what actually happened).
