There once was a kitsune born into a family of powerful kitsunes. Her name is Eiko. They were known for their cunning and trickery. But the one power they are masters of is shapeshifting. Any human or animal they desire to shift, they can do it with perfection. However, such power has its price. If they desire to shift to a specific being, they must kill the being and consume their blood.

The family of kitsunes manage to settle a good life due to their trickery. They snuck to a temple of Bast, the Egyptian goddess of cats. Under the cloak of the dark night, the kitsunes hunted down the temple cats and shifted into their respective victims. The priestesses didn’t notice the difference and continued to worship the kitsunes, thinking it was the cats.

At a young age, Eiko enjoyed causing chaos and pranks in the temple. The mischievousness runs through her blood. Despite the warnings of her family, Eiko pushed the boundaries of her powers and station every day. Eiko often felt trapped by her family, forced to hide her fox form and having to stay within the grounds of the temple. Until one day, Eiko decided to pull a prank that ruined everything around her. There was a person visiting the temple. The person seemed to have a pet crow. Eiko thought it would be fun to impersonate the crow. So she hunted the crow down and shifted into the bird.

When Eiko presented herself to the visitor as the crow, she suddenly felt chains wrapping around her body, forcing Eiko to shift into her human form. Turns out the visitor was a witch and the crow she killed was her familiar. The witch immediately knew Eiko was an imposter. The witch brought Eiko to the priestesses. Her punishment was death. But before the blade touched Eiko’s neck, all of Eiko’s family came and tried to save.

Slaughter on both sides occurred as both sides were not giving up without a fight. For the priestesses, they see Eiko and her family as demons. For Eiko’s family, they knew the only way they can now survive is to kill those in their way. During the midst of the battle, Eiko’s mother jumped in front of Eiko when the witch blasts at her. Her mother died saving her. Full of fear, Eiko ran for her life. On the run, Eiko hopped on the first boat away from the temple. As a result, half of Eiko’s fox mask is stuck on her face, keeping her stuck between her human and fox form. Voices of the human and animal constantly fighting in her mind each day. Not human but not kitsune either. Eiko arrives in the desert kingdom, becoming a merchant, hoping to leave behind her past.
